Next up: KPAC report, July meeting, August weekend
A report card graded by Ka Lahui Hawaii on the Hawaii State Legislature is forthcoming, Ka Lahui citizens were informed by Lehua Kinilau-Cano at the June meeting in Kapolei. Plans are to distribute and release the report card here, in select neighborhoods, and to news media. The Ka Lahui Hawaii Political Action Committee chaired by Healani Sonoda-Pale was busy lobbying this past session to make a difference.
Ka Lahui Hawaii citizens and others interested are invited to the next meeting on Sunday, July 10, 2016, from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., at the Lambert Residence, 47-142 Iuiu St., Kaneohe, HI 96744. Directions: One mile toward Kahaluu on Kamehameha Hwy. from Heeia Kea Pier, turn left on Hunalepo street to Iuiu. The two-story beige house with deck and puakenikeni trees is in front of you as you reach the stop sign.

Keeping up with Ka Lahui Hawaii
The next Ka Lahui Hawaii meeting is on June 4, 2016, from 10:30am – 2:30pm at Hale Ponoi, DHHL, 91-5420 Kapolei Parkway, Kapolei, Hawaii 96707.
Citizens are working on projects including citizen engagement, finalization of the enrollment form, and preparation for education.
Kawika Nahoopii and his education team had an information table at the Aha Aloha Aina held at the Waianae District Park on March 19 and it went very well. Kawika reported that lots of people were glad to see Ka Lahui Hawaii active again. Many wanted to check if they were still registered and Kawika got some updated contact info. He also shared that people were appreciative and proud to be Ka Lahui Hawaii citizens.
Healani Sonoda-Pale traveled to Washington, DC, to present concerns in writing to the US Department of Interior. She carried a three-page letter under Protest Nai Aupuni’s letterhead. The video of her experience may be viewed here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QOw4NLSUukE
Previous kiaaina and TV show host Mililani Trask invited Healani and Lehua Kinilau to speak on this month’s “First Friday” show. If you missed it, tune in to OLELO-TV Oceanic Cable Channel 53. “First Friday” is scheduled to re-air at 7 p.m. on Friday, April 8, 15, 22, and 29. Please check program listings.
The meeting planned for May 7 will be after the Hawaii State legislative session adjourns, so a report will be provided. We’ve discussed a large gathering for the summer or fall, which requires continued engagement and outreach.

Next Ka Lāhui Hawaiʻi meeting on March 6
These are the next scheduled Ka Lāhui Hawaiʻi meetings:
• A Citizens Meeting is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., Sunday, March 6, at UH Mānoa Hawaiian Studies Kamakakūokalani Building, Room 202.
• The Political Action Committee (KPAC) meets as needed to review the bills in the Hawaiʻi State Legislature; it lobbies and drafts testimony. All interested Ka Lāhui Hawaiʻi citizens and honorary citizens are welcome to attend.
These activities are the outcomes of the Feb. 6 citizens meeting at which 20 people attended. At that meeting, attended by the three past kiaʻāina—Josiah Black Hoʻohuli, Mlilani Trask, Lehua Kinilau—and several past island and district poʻo and officers, it was pointed out that Ka Lāhui can stand on the platform of its history, its Constitution and Master Plan, and its educational materials. There was a consensus to reconvene the Ka Lāhui Hawaiʻi legislature.

Citizens meeting set for Sept. 16, 2014, Honolulu
A Ka Lāhui Hawaiʻi citizens meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m., September 16, 2014, at Kamakakūokalani Building Room 202 at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa Center for Hawaiian Studies on Dole Street in Honolulu. Expected agenda items include discussion of plans to move educational outreach forward.
New to the curricula is a seven-step process for any indigenous peoples for achieving self-determination, as proposed in an article by Mililani B. Trask. The seven steps are:
- Community Education & Kuka on Community Goals & Process for Nation Building
- The Political Status Ballot
- Elect Delegates to Draft a Constitution
- Convention of Delegates
- Peoples Ratify Convention Documents
- Peoples Elect Leadership
- Nation Is Formed

When Ka Lahui Hawaii was most active in the past, email addresses for most KLH citizens were not available. As a nation rebuilding from grass roots, citizens communicated by telephone and the U.S. mail. Our islands took turns in hosting the legislature.
